Statement on Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2012

With regard to the one person one vote segment in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2012, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) wishes to make the following statement:

It was with good faith that TVB launched the one person one vote segment in the Pageant to provide viewers with diversified infotainment. With the support of advance technology, the Company introduced this interactive online voting segment in the hope of enhancing creativity and services. Arrangement was made with a sponsor to give away a luxurious car as a prize for the lucky draw. To keep pace with time, TVB has, in recent years, devoted much resources and effort in promoting digitization and high definition, developing tvb.com, myTV mobile app as well as the interactive function of TVBfun mobile app.

The programme ran smoothly securing an average rating of 27 TVRs, higher than the 24 TVRs recorded last year. It is with much regret that the network paralyzed during the 15-minute one person one vote segment, failing to achieve our good intent. Neither could the luxurious car be given away. In this respect, TVB has earlier expressed its sincere apology to viewers.

Our staff has dedicated quite a long time in the planning and technological arrangement of the interactive segment, as well as seeking assistance from mobile application provider Cherrypicks and Cloud computing platform provider Microsoft. After the mishap, the Company has spent the past few days investigating the cause. A preliminary finding showed that there was an abnormal flow (several times higher than the local population). Thus the Company will hire an independent professional company to conduct an in-depth investigation to identify the problem and to see if there was any external disturbance. Our staff might have been over aggressive when striking a balance between the enthusiasm and promptitude of the voting and the technical cum network support. Regardless of the result of the findings, TVB will fulfill its commitments to viewers:

1)@ The Company will continue to enhance the computer programme system for similar programmes, improve details of the game to minimize the risk of technical error and external disturbance. The Company will keep moving forward and serve the community at large.

2)@ To continue to provide viewers with quality entertainment and increase their involvement, the Company will, on top of honouring its original promise, increase the number of luxurious cars to be given out for the lucky draw from one to two. The prizes will be given away by drawing lots on 2 September (Sunday) between 10 pm and 11:45 pm in the segment Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2012 Public Participation in the Car Award to be inserted in the programme Wai Yin Association 30th Anniversary Special.

To minimize the risk of network paralysis, the Company will adopt a simple pre-registration system for the lot draw. Viewers who wish to participate in the lucky draw can simply complete the online registration procedures at TVBfun or tvb.com. Details of the registration method will be announced by tomorrow (Friday) the latest to enable viewers to have at least 48 hours to register before the commencement of lucky draw.

TVB wishes to have viewers support and understanding of our good intent and determination to enhance services. The Company will continue to keep its promise, delivering innovation and excellence in programming for the enjoyment of the public.
