Television Broadcasts Limited
New Digital Channels Will Soon Arrive at Your Districts
DTT Coverage to Reach Around 70% Population
Viewers can enjoy the Beijing Olympics in High Definition

To enable viewers to enjoy diverse and brand new audio/visual entertainment in the digital era and the first-ever 2008 Beijing Olympics, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) is building principal transmitting stations in full swing. It is anticipated that four principal transmitting stations will start operation within June instead of by the end of the year as originally scheduled. Residents serviced by the following four new stations will be able to enjoy more diversified programmes on TVB’s new HDJade and soon-to-be launched J2:

Principal Transmitting StationsDate Providing HD Jade and J2
Digital Broadcast Signals
Kowloon Peak30 May
Golden Hill6 June
Castle Peak3rd week in June
Lamma IslandEnd June
(Please click here for details of districts partially or entirely covered by the DTT signals)

With the above four principal transmitting stations and the areas already covered by the Temple Hill principal transmitting station launched at the end of last year, about 70% of the population* will then be able to enjoy the many benefits embraced by digital and high definition (HD) broadcasting including:
  • Better television reception --- maintaining consistent picture quality, eliminating snow effect/ghost effect and improving picture quality in areas which are suffering from poor analogue television reception;
  • Better enjoyment --- detailed and crystal clear images, realistic and vibrant colours, brand new audio/visual experience;
  • Massive coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics with HDTV, viewers will be able to watch these programmes in superb quality that they have never experienced before;
  •
  • More channels;
  • The ability to obtain essential programme information (such as programme name, currently showing programme and up-coming programme) and useful information and programme-related information.
To celebrate the first-ever 2008 Beijing Olympics to be staged in the mainland and the Equestrian Events co-hosted in Hong Kong, TVB will invest large unprecedented resources to cover this historical event and to timely capture every precious moment. During the Beijing Olympics, viewers will be able to watch comfortably at home digital broadcast of the games including:
  • A high definition channel --- HDJade, Hong Kong’s first-ever 24 hour HD channel for the exclusive broadcast of the Olympics;
  • Programming arrangement of HDJade will differ from Jade for most of the time with 24 hour live/taped broadcast of Olympics’ major events;
  • Providing digital family with about 400 hours of crystal images, realistic and vibrant colours coverage of the Olympics
In order not to miss watching this long-awaited Olympics, viewers should, as soon as possible, liaise with their building management to upgrade their antennae system and equipping themselves with higher-tier set-top boxes or integrated television sets capable of receiving local digital terrestrial television (DTT) signals.

In addition to the above mentioned four principal transmitting stations, TVB will also work towards the commencement of service in August of the remaining two principal transmitting station and fill-in station (Cloudy Hill and Mt Nicholson) so that 75% of the population will be able to receive digital signals before the Beijing Olympics. Announcement of their commencement will be made later at an appropriate time.

TVB will work closely with the Hong Kong Government to promote digital terrestrial broadcasting, aiming to enable the majority of the Hong Kong people to enjoy the many benefits brought about by the advent of this new technology.

More details of the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting are available at the Government’s website: http://www.digitaltv.gov.hk or our website: http://digitaltv.tvb.com/digitaltv.html

*Not including Cloudy Hill and Mt Nicholson transmitting stations. If these two stations are included, digital broadcasting will cover 75% of the population.
